Terra MODIS Mini-reprocessing R2022.0.2

Terra MODIS Mini-reprocessing R2022.0.2

1. Introduction

The R2022.0.2 update for Terra MODIS addresses data quality concerns by implementing cross-calibration with Aqua MODIS, which itself has been updated to improve the scientific accuracy of its Ocean Color data products (refer to Aqua R2022.0.2 for details). This revision ensures consistency between Terra and Aqua datasets, incorporating calibration enhancements to address issues observed post-2022. Additionally, the update accounts for adjustments made to Aqua's calibration following its significant decline in data accuracy starting in 2023. These improvements have been applied to Terra MODIS data collected since July 1, 2021, ensuring better quality and continuity in Terra's Ocean Color products.

2. Impact and Quality Assessment

2.1. Impact on Timeseries

The impact on large-scale regional means in the ocean color time series is shown below. Figure 1 presents the averages of MODIS Terra Rrs in global deep water over time for both R2022.0.1 (blue lines) and R2022.0.2 (red lines). The Figure 2 compares Terra-MODIS R2022.0.2 (red lines) with Aqua-MODIS R2022.0.2 (blue lines) for the mean of Rrs in global dep water.
