Iceland's Coast Shows Hints of Spring |
As we can see in this clear view between the clouds, Iceland is very much still covered in snow and ice at this time of the year. However, in the ocean waters surrounding it, phytoplankton is starting to bloom. Phytoplankton are photosynthetic organisms that cannot resist currents, and they form visible swirling patterns that follow oceanic water flows and currents. They are at the base of the oceanic food web and are of crucial importance for fisheries, which are a significant part of Iceland's economy.
