Fire and Ice |
Ice is melting on the Hudson Bay in Canada while we can see wildfires blazing in the boreal forest. During June 2023, 16,000 km2 of land--an area larger than the state of Connecticut, burned in Quebec alone. The fires were in the vast majority ignited by lightning and have caused tens of thousands of evacuations. The impressive smoke plume coming from those fires has been impacting the air quality over the East Coast of North America, and extinguishing such massive fires in some extremely remote areas is out of the reach of local authorities, even with help received from multiple countries. Wildfires in the boreal forest are becoming more frequent and intense because of climate change , and they release carbon from the trees into the atmosphere, which in turn, contributes to the problem.
