Noctiluca Bloom in the Arabian Sea

As it has every winter for decades now, the northern Arabian Sea appeared to be hosting a massive algal bloom again this year. Those green swirls are most likely the heterotrophic dinoflagellate, Noctiluca scintillans. The VIIRS instruments aboard the NOAA20 and SNPP satellites captured this view on Feb. 20, 2022.
