Russian Smoke

Forest fires burning in Russia were sending enormous quantities of smoke into the Arctic in the summer of 2021. The same heat that increases the severity of the forest fires also is reducing sea ice cover all along the Russian coastline.

The above Aqua/MODIS image comprises data collected during eleven consecutive orbits on August 3 and 4, 2021. Click on it to get a much larger (66.5 megabytes, 16,200 x 11,411 pixels) version.
