Internal Waves in the Andaman Sea

For many years it has been known that internal waves propagating through the ocean can affect the distribution of overlying surface waves in ways that make the internal waves detectable from orbit (see Figure 5 in this 1980 paper). The above Landsat 8 image of the Andaman Sea by the coast of Myanmar on November 29, 2019 exhibits many of these internal wave signatures as revealed by sun glint on the water's surface.
