NIMBUS-7 CZCS Reprocessing R2022

1. Introduction

As part of the 2022 Ocean Color Reprocessing (R2022), data from the Nimbus-7 Coastal Zone Color Scanner (CZCS) was updated to improve consistency with modern ocean color data records. While CZCS operated from 1978 to 1986, its historical significance as the first ocean color sensor remains invaluable for long-term climate studies. The R2022 reprocessing applied refined calibration techniques, improved atmospheric correction, and updated bio-optical algorithms to enhance the accuracy and usability of CZCS data. These updates ensure better alignment with contemporary ocean color missions, supporting cross-sensor analyses and extending the historical ocean color time series.

Starting with this reprocessing, L1A data has been converted from HDF5 to netCDF4, and L2 and L3 data products have been derived from the reformatted L1As.
