VIIRS-SNPP Ocean Color Reprocessing 2022.0.1

VIIRS-SNPP Ocean Color Reprocessing 2022.0.1

Introduction

The Ocean Biology Processing Group (OBPG) has identified a drift in the on orbit calibration applied to the OBPG processed SNPP VIIRS ocean color data (R2022). An updated on orbit calibration has been derived to remove this drift and bring the SNPP VIIRS data into better agreement with the NOAA-21 VIIRS and Aqua-MODIS data. During our tests of the updated calibration, we identified a minor error in the calibration that affected data collected in late 2020. This has also been corrected. In order to ensure a consistent time series for the SNPP VIIRS data, this reprocessing was applied to the data collected since 01 August 2020.

Impact and Quality Assessment

Impact of Reprocessing on Timeseries

To assess the impact of this R2022.0.1 reprocessing, a comparative timeseries analysis was perfomed. The following two figures show the comparison of Chlorophyll and Rrs(λ) timeseries (left panels) and ratio (right panels) for global deep water (>1000m) between R2022.0 and R2022.0.1 (Figure 1), and VIIRS-JPSS1 R2022 versus VIIRS-SNPP R2022.0.1 (Figure 2).
