Fresnel Transmission Correction

Fresnel Transmission Correction

There has been an ongoing effort to produce a full f/Q correction for SeaWiFS nLw retrievals. Unfortunately, results to date have been less promising than was hoped. Until such time as a more complete, and correct, f/Q correction can be implemented for SeaWiFS, a simple Fresnel reflectance correction has been applied. The correction implemented assumes a flat horizontal plane ocean, such that the transmission across the air-sea interface directly follows basic laws of geometrical optics. While this is an oversimplification of the problem, it is a move in the right direction. Figure 1 shows the effect of this Fresnel correction on the average of 1 year's worth of LAC coverage near Hawaii. The solid line is the corrected data, the dashed is uncorrected. Note that the roll off in radiance near the edge of the GAC swath and beyond is reduced.
