Brazil-Malvinas Confluence

This enhanced image of the Brazil-Malvinas Confluence zone is a combined image displaying the dynamic biological and physiological oceanographic processes occurring off the coast of Argentina and Uruguay in true color (center). The warm “poleward” flowing Brazil Current and the cold equatorward flowing Malvinas Current converge as seen in the Sea Surface Temperature overlay (left). This convergence zone features complex temperature, salinity, and nutrient gradients driven by energetic eddies and currents creating an impressive biologically productive hotspot as evident in this phytoplankton chlorophyll-a image (right).
