Western North Atlantic

Snow still frosts the northeastern USA and eastern Canada in this February 23, 2020 Aqua/MODIS image, but the phytoplankton of the adjacent North Atlantic are gearing up for another spring bloom under sunny skies and warming temperatures. Blue centered warm core rings spin clockwise amidst the teeming green just north of the similarly blue Gulf Stream that birthed them. The brighter waters east of Cape Cod overlie the shallow, productive Georges Bank.
