Project Title: Turbidity Modeling in the Adriatic Sea

Principal Investigator(s): Richard Signell, Farid Askari

Funding Agency(s): NATO/SACLANT Undersea Research Centre

Description of the Research Project and Justification for Real-time SeaWiFS Data:

This project seeks to assess the performance of coupled light/sediment/optics models
using the Adriatic Sea as a natural laboratory in the context of a major collaborative
experiment. We are comparing various meteo, ocean, sediment, and optics models:
COAMPS, LAMI, NCOM, ROMS and LSOM and collecting insitu data from moored and shipboard
optical instruments.

The near realtime SeaWiFS data will be used for adaptive sampling of optical properties
while at sea in the Adriatic, and for comparison to simulated model results.
