Runtime SeaDAS

Overview

It is possible to run SeaDAS without purchasing an IDL license from ITT Visual Information Solutions. This "runtime" mode is available for all supported platforms and uses an IDL "embedded license". Running SeaDAS in this mode will take slightly longer to start up, but thereafter will run as fast as with a full IDL development license.

Installing runtime SeaDAS

NOTE:  Installing this feature does not limit you to only running SeaDAS in runtime mode.

The compressed tar file seadas_idl_rt.tar.gz contains all the files required to implement this feature. If you do not already have SeaDAS installed on your machine, follow the standard installation instructions.

If you do have SeaDAS installed, it is not necessary to reinstall the whole SeaDAS software package in order to use the this feature. You may evaluate the runtime feature by simply downloading the file seadas_idl_rt.tar.gz and extracting it into your $SEADAS home directory. (This file will require approximately 500MB of additional disk space when extracted.)

Switching between runtime SeaDAS and a full IDL development license

To use runtime SeaDAS (with the IDL embedded license):

> seadas -em

To run SeaDAS using a full IDL development license:

> seadas

Limitations when running SeaDAS with an IDL embedded license

Full automation of data and graphics processing is possible when using runtime SeaDAS. The main limitation is that the IDL command line is not available. However, the SeaDAS command mode is still accessible via use of SeaDAS batch scripts. These scripts can be fully-functioning (slightly modified) IDL procedures. The only limitation of this approach is that the batch scripts must be run non-interactively, meaning SeaDAS will exit after the batch file's last line is parsed.

You can use the User-defined Band Commands capability (mband_cmd) to interactively access SeaDAS and IDL functions when working with loaded band data.
