SeaWiFS Primary Data Product Generation Programs


Generate L1A file from L0 file (l1agen_seawifs)

Interactive mode:
  1. Start the l1agen_seawifs Main Widget:
  2. Enter '$SDSDEMO/L0_hrpt1.dat' in the Input L0 file field.
  3. Enter the directory for the output file in the Output directory field.

  4. NOTE: The name of the output file is assigned automatically by the program depends on the input file.
  5. Click the Submit button to submit the program as a UNIX background job, OR

  6. click the Run button to start the program in foreground and wait.
    NOTE: This program is primarily for HRPT stations, since NO Level-0 data will be archived and distributed by the Goddard DAAC. See additional information on navigation files which must be kept up-to-date.
  7. Click the Quit button to quit this program.
Command mode:

Generate L1B file from L1A (GAC, LAC, HRPT) file (l1bgen)

Interactive mode:
  1. Start the l1bgen Main Widget:
  2. Enter '$SDSDEMO/L1_gac1.hdf' in the Input L1A file field.
  3. Enter the L1B output file name in the Output L1B file field.
  4. Update, if necessary, the default input parameter values in the Input parameters and values field.
  5. Save or load, optional, all the input parameters to or from a parameter file:
  6. NOTE: the parameter file saved here may also be used in the command mode.
  7. Click the Submit button to submit the program as a UNIX background job, OR

  8. click the Run button to start the program in foreground and wait.
  9. Click the Quit button to quit this program.
Command mode:


Generate L2 file from L1A (GAC, LAC, HRPT) file (l2gen)

Interactive mode:
  1. Start the l2gen Main Widget:
  2. Enter '$SDSDEMO/L1_gac1.hdf' in the Input L1A file field.
  3. Enter the L2 output file name in the Output L2 file field.
  4. Update, if necessary, the pixel and line range and subsampling.
  5. Update, if necessary, the default options and threshold values for flags and masks.
  6. Enter or update, if necessary, the file names for ancillary data (MET and OZONE), calibration table, land mask, and shallow water mask.
  7. Save or load, optional, all the input parameters to or from a parameter file:
  8. NOTE: the parameter file saved here may also be used in the command mode.
  9. Click the Submit button to submit the program as a UNIX background job, OR

  10. click the Run button to start the program in foreground and wait.
  11. Click the Quit button to quit this program.
Command mode:

Generate L3 space or time-binned files from L2 files (l2bin/l3bin)

Interactive mode:
  1. For Space Binning:
  2. Start the l2bin Main Widget:
    1. in menu mode, select Process -> SeaWiFS -> l2bin from the SeaDAS main menu
    2. Select the input L2 file(s) by pressing the Select button to display the File Selection Widget. After selected, click the Ok button to quit the File Selection Widget.
    3. The file selected in the previous step will be listed in Input filename/listfile window. The file(s) will also be scanned for certain default information for space binning that will be displayed inside the Options for l2bin window.
    4. Update, if necessary, the information in the Options for Space Bin window.
    5. Use Set Flags button, if necessary, to update the flags to be applied in the space binning.
    6. Click the Run button to start the program and wait.
    7. Click the Quit button to quit this program.
  3. For Time Binning:
  4. Start the l3bin Main Widget:
    1. in menu mode, select Process -> SeaWiFS -> l3bin from the SeaDAS main menu
    2. Select the input listfile containing the filename(s) of the L3 spatially or temporally binned files (not L2 files used in l2bin) by pressing the Select button to display the File Selection Widget.
    3. The file selected in the previous step will be listed in Input listfile window. The files contained in the listfile will be scanned for certain default information to be displayed inside the Options for l3bin window.
    4. Update, if necessary, the information in the Options for l3bin window.
    5. Click the Run button to start the program and wait.
    6. Click the Quit button to quit this program.

Generate L3 SMI product from L3 binned data (smigen)

Interactive mode:
  1. Start the Smigen Main Widget:
  2. Enter '$SDSDEMO/L3_daily1.hdf' in the Level-3 binned file field.
  3. Select one product at a time for processing. (Note, the products listed in bold are the products that exist in the input files.). Each product added to the final process list will generate one global output file.
    1. Modify the Measure if desired.
    2. Press different Products to see the Scaling defaults change. The default scaling values are the defaults defined by the SeaWiFS Project.
    3. Modify File Out, and ASCII Palette File fields if desired for the current product.
    4. To add the product to the list for processing, press Add to Process List.
  4. Once all products desired have been added to the process list:
  5. To re-edit your input parameter choices for a listed product,:
  6. click the Quit button to quit this program.
Command mode:

Generate L1A browse (Band 865nm) file or L2 browse (chlor_a) file (browse)

Interactive mode:
  1. Start the browse Main Widget:
  2. Enter a SeaWiFS L1A or L2 file in the L1A or L2 file input field.
  3. Enter the output file name in the Output browse file: field.
  4. Click the Run button to start the program.
  5. Click the Quit button to quit this program.
Command mode:


Generate projected L1A HDF file (bl1map)

Interactive mode:
  1. Start the Bl1map Main Widget:
  2. Enter '$SDSDEMO/L1_gac1.hdf' in the Input file field.
  3. Enter an output file name in the Output file field.
  4. Use the toggle button to select the band and update the title for the band selected to be written to the output HDF file. The title will be used for the SD name in the output HDF file for that band and when it is loaded by seadisp the title name used here will be listed for selection.
  5. Select the projection and update the projection parameters (Center Lat/Lon, Rotation, Center Azimuth, Lat Limit, Lon Limit, Isotropic), if necessary, from the Map Projection Inputs window.

  6. NOTE: The SATELLITE projection is NOT currently working.
  7. Update the default output image size and output region, if necessary.
  8. Click the Submit button to submit the program as a UNIX background job, OR

  9. click the Run button to start the program in foreground and wait.
  10. Click the Quit button to quit this program.
Command mode:

  2. Enter '$SDSDEMO/L3_daily1.hdf' in the Input file field and hit the Enter key on your keyboard.
  3. Enter an output file name in the Output file field.
  4. Use the toggle buttons in Measure and Product fields to select the output products to be generated and then click the Add button to add those combined selections into the Output list window. Update the titles for the products selected to be written to the output HDF file. The title will be used for the SD name in the output HDF file for that product and when it is loaded by seadisp the title name used here will be listed for selection.
  5. Select the projection and update the projection parameters (Center Lat/Lon, Rotation, Center Azimuth, Lat Limit, Lon Limit, Isotropic), if necessary, from the Map Projection Inputs window.

  6. NOTE: The SATELLITE projection is NOT currently working.
  7. Update the default output image size and output region, if necessary.

  2. Enter '$SDSDEMO/L1_gac1.hdf' in the Input L1A file field.
  3. Enter an output file name in the Output L0 file field.
  4. Click the Run button to start the program.
  5. Click the Quit button to quit this program.

Generate an L1A and a GEO file from an L0 file (l1agen_modis)

Interactive mode:
  1. Start the l1agen_modis Main Widget:
  2. Enter '$SDSDEMO/MOD00.P2006214.0540_1.PDS' in the Input MODIS L0 (PDS) file field.
  3. Optionally enter the name of the output files (if no output names are specified, they will be constructed using the format AYYYYDDDHHMMSS.
  4. Click the Submit button to submit the program as a UNIX background job, OR
  5. click the Run button to start the program in foreground and wait.
  6. Click the Quit button to quit this program.

NOTE: This program is primarily for Direct Broadcast stations, since NO Level-0 data is archived or distributed by the SeaWiFS Project.

Command mode:


Generate GEO file from L1A file (geogen_modis)

Interactive mode:
  1. Start the geogen_modis Main Widget:
  2. Enter '$SDSDEMO/A2005191123500.L1A_LAC' in the Input MODIS L1A file field.
  3. Optionally enter the name of the output file (if no output name is specified, it will be constructed using the format AYYYYDDDHHMMSS.GEO
  4. Click the Submit button to submit the program as a UNIX background job, OR
  5. click the Run button to start the program in foreground and wait.
  6. Click the Quit button to quit this program.

Command mode:


Generate L1B file from L1A file (l1bgen_modis)

Interactive mode:
  1. Start the l1bgen_modis Main Widget:
  2. Enter '$SDSDEMO/A2005191123500.L1A_LAC' in the Input MODIS L1A file field.

SeaWiFS Data Extraction and Quality Control Programs


L1A and L2 file extraction (l1aextract_seawifs)

Interactive mode:
  1. Start the Subscene Main Widget:
  2. Enter '$SDSDEMO/L1_gac1.hdf' or '$SDSDEMO/L2_gac1.hdf' in the Input file name field.
  3. Press Enter key when the cursor is in the Input file name field, OR, click the OK button to load and display the image.
  4. Move the cursor inside the image display window and drag the mouse LEFT button to move the highlighted box to the area you want to extract.
  5. Move the cursor near to the corner or the side of the highlighted box and drag the mouse RIGHT button to change the size of the highlighted box.
  6. Click the Coastline button to display the coastline (Optional).
  7. Extract and save the image defined by the highlighted box to a file:
  8. Click the Quit button to quit this program.
Command mode:

L1A coastline registration and warping (register)

Interactive mode:
  1. Start the Register Main Widget:
  2. Enter '$SDSDEMO/L1_gac1.hdf' in the Input file field.
  3. Press Enter key when the cursor is in the Input file field, OR, click the Load button at the bottom of the widget to load the data and display the Scroll Window Widget and the Register Window Widget.
  4. Use the scroll bar on the Scroll Window Widget to view the whole image and click the Load to Register button to load the current viewable image to the Register Window Widget.
  5. Register the image with the coastline:
  6. Warp the image:
  7. Zoom the image:
  8. Click the Quit button to quit this program.

L2 display and reprocess (l2chk)

Interactive mode:
  1. Start the L2chk Main Widget:
  2. Enter '$SDSDEMO/L2_gac1.hdf' in the Input L2 file field.
  3. Press Enter key when the cursor is in the Input L2 file field, OR, click the Load button at the top-right of the widget to load the data and display the image (the first one loaded) of the selected L2 product in the Image and Flags Display Widget.
  4. If you want to change the default L2 products (nLw_443, nLw_555, chlor_a) to be loaded and worked on, use the Set up Product List button to do so.
  5. If you want to change the L2 product to be displayed, use the L2 Product drop down menu to select the L2 product you want to display.
  6. Manipulate flag displaying:
  7. Define the rectangular area for reprocessing:
  8. Animate the products and flags display:
  9. Click the Quit button to quit this program.
