Why are there no MODIS true color images on the browser?

The Level-1A products that we archive and distribute retain only the bands required for ocean color data processing.  The red, green, blue ocean color bands typically saturate over land and clouds. So, to make good true-color imagery would require that we carry along some of the 250-meter and 500-meter land bands in the Level-1A file, which would nearly triple the files size. We are looking at alternative schemes to incorporate the land-band information without greatly increasing the Level-1A file size.
