Hi,

I downloaded MODIS L1A files recently for reprocessing to L3, using a script to first process to L2 (attached, seadas64_script_file_MODIS). It worked well, and I was able to display the output in SeaDAS (see A2008358192000.L2_chlor_a.png attached).

I used another script to process this L2 files to L3, first trying l2bin (seadas_L2_bin.txt, attached). Although the processing seemed to work and an L3 output file was created (see run1_output.txt for X11 output), I ran into issues when trying to either display or further process this image to SMI. When trying to display the image using the load widget for MODIS L3 binned files, I chose mean / chlor_a from the Measure and Product respectively, and added to the Output List. I left all the other parameters as default, to see if it worked. However when I tried to load I got an error:

The following: error was encountered: OPENW: Error opening file. Unit: 100
File: /Applications/seadas6.4/tmp/SDS_seadisp-binmap.tmp Please consult the supplier of the application

I tried reprocessing using l2bin with simply the infile and ofile parameters defined, but got the same result. i also tried processing to SMI from this L3 file, but it failed with a similar error.

I've attached my original outputted L3 file.

Thank you in advance for your help.

The l3b file is fine, but there are only 56 filled bins.  If you set the mapping parameters appropriate to the ROI, SeaDAS will load the file, but you'll have to look closely to see the data.
smigen works on the file with resolution set to 2km or higher, there is an issue with 1km and I've asked that this be investigated.
If you load the L2 file and apply the same masks as were applied in the l3bin process, you will see why there are so few bins.

Hi Sean,

Thanks for the explanation - the file is displaying now that I specified the mapping parameters.

Thinking about the lack of data in my file, I read this morning the technical document outlining changes in flag use accompanying the Fourth SeaWiFS reprocessing (Vol 22 SeaWiFS Postlaunch Tech Report). When processing this file I used the standard flags listed on the ocean color website. However I notice that there are some differences, particularly with STRAYLIGHT (from mask to flag). I haven't found any notes related to corresponding changes in flags for MODIS processing however.

Do the mask and flag updates listed in the SeaWiFS document also apply to MODIS processing?

Thanks,

Mattias

Found the info I needed in the defaults files.
