The 2012.0 MODIS-Aqua reprocessing began today, May 1 2012 12:38PM EST.  Level-2 files are being replaced starting from the beginning of the mission.  Level-3 products will be regenerated once the Level-2 processing is complete, probably within 2 weeks.

Details on the reprocessing changes and expected impact are available here:

Hi Bryan,

The reprocessing write-up mentions LUT version V6.1.15.3 but SeaDAS updating seems to use V6.1.15.4 (see below) -- is there a difference?

Thanks, Barry

SeaDAS Version 6.3 (pid = 883)
SeaDAS>
update_luts.py aqua --verbose
[ MODIS ]
+ leapsec.dat
+ utcpole.dat
[ MODIS: AQUA ]
+ EVAL:MYD02_Emissive_LUTs.V6.1.15.4.hdf
+ EVAL:MYD02_QA_LUTs.V6.1.15.4.hdf
+ EVAL:MYD02_Reflective_LUTs.V6.1.15.4.hdf
[ Done ]

No, just a new segment added by MCST to the end of the calibration time-series.  The version will generally increment every month or two.

Hi,
Is the NRT processing has been also switched to the new processing the 1st of May?

Best Regards, Philippe

Yes.  The forward stream was updated to the reprocessing configuration on Monday, April 23rd.

With a fully updated SeaDAS 6.3 will I get the new reprocessed Level 2 product when I download an L1A file from the oceancolor website?

Thanks

Not yet.  We are still working on the update for 6.3 to incorporate the changes for the Aqua reprocessing.
We expect to release the update within a week.

Regards,
Sean

Well now I'm confused.  What's involved (generally) in the 6.3 update other than getting the current LUTs - which I thought we could do with SeaDAS update script.   Barry

The aqua reprocessing is primarily a transition to a new calibration approach developed by the MODIS Calibration Support Team.  The new calibration LUTs include a format change (higher order of coefficients), so the update also requires new l1bgen_modis code.  Auto-updates of the new LUTs for distribution to SeaDAS users was disabled until the code update can be distributed, as the new LUTs will break the old code in SeaDAS.

Bryan, do you have any information about the reprocessing of the level 1b products? Will they be reprocessed as well and is there a time schedule for it?

thanks knut

The OBPG does not distribute Level-1B.  We process from Level-1A, apply the new calibration, to produce Level-1B, generate the Level-2 products, and delete the Level-1B.  If you are acquiring Level-1B from another source (e.g., LAADS), you should verify with them.  I believe LAADS is distributing reprocessed (Collection 6) Level-1B already, for MODIS-Aqua.

The MODIS-Aqua Reprocessing from Level-1A through Level-2 finished early Sunday May 6th.  Seems recent processing system upgrades have exceeded all expectations.  Level-3 reprocessing of the standard product suite is now underway.  The Level-3 for year 2012 has already been replaced through daily, 8-day, and monthly.

Hello,
Have the updates for SeaDAS been released yet?
And just to clarify, the L1B's will need to be reproduced, but the L1A's are have not changed correct?
Thanks,
Kim

No, the SeaDAS update has not been released yet.  There will be an announcement on this forum as well as on the SeaDAS website when the release is ready.
Yes, the L1B's will need to be regenerated, the L1As are unchanged.

Regards,
Sean
