Ancillary data, N vs S?

What is the difference between the following two files:
http://oceandata.sci.gsfc.nasa.gov/cgi/getfile/N199930000_MET_NCEPN_6h.hdf.bz2
http://oceandata.sci.gsfc.nasa.gov/cgi/getfile/S199930000_NCEP.MET

I'm trying to get a full set of ancillary data, particularly the wind product. Some days are missing S*_NCEP.MET data but have the N*_MET_NCEPN*. With regard to wind data, can I substitute the N* files for the S* files? A quick hdiff shows only difference in the humidity data, so that's promising -- but though I should check before randomly grabbing data...
