Does anyone have any experience creating animations from a time-series of mapped L3 images?

I would like to create an animation from MODIS monthly composite .png files without losing too much image quality.

Any advice much appreciated.

One possibility is described here.  I use gifsicle to assemble the
individual GIF images into an animation.
