I have two systems that from a software standpoint are theoretically identical, however clearly they're not.
On one of those systems, I can open an L1A file I have and display it until I'm blue in the face. On the other system, I can open the L1A and select a band, but when I clcik on the "display" button on the "band list selection" widget, the scene is displayed and then I get a seg fault. I'm pretty sure it's not the file since it's the same file on the same (samba mounted) disk for both systems.
Both systems are FC5 systems (using the FC4 install kits).
Both systems are running my one IDL installation. Version 6.2 on both.
Both systems are running SeaDAS 5.0.5.
Both systems had seadas_setup rerun and the resulting env file sourced
Well actually it turns out there was a difference, software-wise, between the 2 systems. The one that failed had been "yum update"d with some newer xorg stuff. When I reverted those rpms to the older version, everything works again as expected. From what I can gather from other posts elsewhere on the net, it's an issue with IDL. The rpms in question are
libX11-devel.i386 1.0.0-4.fc5 -3.FC5.0
libX11.i386 1.0.0-4.fc5 -3.FC5.0
libXfont-devel.i386 1.2.8-1.fc5 1.0.0-3
libXfont.i386 1.2.8-1.fc5 1.0.0-3
xorg-x11-server-sdk.i386 1.0.1-9.fc5.7 .6
xorg-x11-server-Xdmx.i386 1.0.1-9.fc5.7 .6
xorg-x11-server-Xnest.i386 1.0.1-9.fc5.7 .6
xorg-x11-server-Xorg.i386 1.0.1-9.fc5.7 .6

ok thanks for the info
I just updated my home FC5 system (Friday the 13th before seeing your post!) and encountered this problem. There is information at <http://www.ittvis.com/forum/message.asp?fmid=2848
>. Debian 4.0 is also affected. One suggested workaround:
did not work for me. There is a note from IDL Support on the ITTvis forum requesting configuration information -- anyone running something other
than FC5 or Debian 4 who encounters this should post the requested information there.
The ITTVIS IDL forum thread now has the following tech support posting:
"TT Visual Information Solutions just published externally as a Tech Tip both the immediate workarounds and the more permanent solution that is on the way in IDL 6.4 final release and IDL 6.3 patch release for Linux. See Tech Tip #4177 ("Upgrades in the Mesa library for Linux and in X11 Library Security Are Crashing IDL") at URL:http://www.ittvis.com/services/techtip.asp?ttid=4177
The techtip specifically addresses Debian and Fedora Core. Two changes, one in Mesa and the other a security patch for libX11, are discussed.
Other linux distros are distributing the libX11 patch (e.g., gentoo). On gentoo I restored the old libx11.so.6.0.0 over the updated version and this appears to work. The only difference between the two gentoo libraires was the very simple security patch that adds some sanity checks to the arguments of a couple functions, so headers, etc. were not affected by the patch. This may not work for distributions that tend to update less frequently so that each update bundles many changes.
Hello, just to report:
- i am using now Xubuntu (debian-based) and freshly installed SeaDAS 5.1. At first i had the problem with "core dumped" error, the program didn't want to start GUI at all. The first attempt to resolve that was "export LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=1" command.
I could succesfully start the program afterwards, but could not display the L2 files. The solution was to follow the instructions from ITT (see the link above) and as the result the program works fine now, didn't even have to restart X.
