Is there a way to convert level 3 .hdf MODIS images to .geoTIFF files? I am in need of importing one MODIS image into ArcGIS to do some advanced analysis of animal movement tracks, but it seems that the conversion process in ENVI cannot be completed because of missing SD latitude and longitude data... Any help will be most appreciated :-)

By "MODIS image" do you mean the "standard mapped image" (SMI)?  SMI uses the cylindrical equidistant projection and is supported by many 3rd party tools, although you may end up having to reenter geolocation information manually.

From your description I gather you need geophysical values (as opposed to an RGB image).   NASA SeaDAS 6.3 can create RGB geotiff images using the GUI, but to get geophysical values you need a user band command http://oceancolor.gsfc.nasa.gov/forum/oceancolor/topic_show.pl?tid=4473.  ESA'a BEAM has better support for geotiff and will replace the current IDL GUI in SeaDAS 7, so may be a better option if you don't already have SeaDAS 6.3.  If you have GDAL compiled with HDF4 support, see http://grass.osgeo.org/wiki/MODIS#Import and http://r-sig-geo.2731867.n2.nabble.com/Read-HDF-files-td6750856.html for examples.
