Hi, I'm running seadas 6.1.2 on a mac (snow leopard) with IDL 7.1. I have attempted to create a space-binned file using l2gen from both a script and from the GUI, using A2006258211000.L2_LAC_OC downloaded from the oceancolor site. The L3 file is created with no problem using either method, but when I open it, there is a large chunk of data missing, at least for chlorophyll (haven't checked all the other fields). I turned off all masks, so it's not simply ignoring "bad" data during the binning. The original L2 file shows quite a lot of nice data in the Monterey Bay region, but that is all zero'd out in the L3 file. Other parts of the swath are retained.
I've tried a few iterations at different resolutions (e.g. 1 versus 9 km) and with all masks disabled, or some turned back on, and I get the same results. As far as I can tell there's nothing unusual about the swath of missing data (it's more or less in the middle of the swath, it shows up fine in L2, etc). I was attempting to merge multiple L2 files for a single day to create a single timebinned L3 file when I noticed this phenomenon. I suspect it happens with some regularity, because I've processed a few years of west coast data to 1-day resolution and I'm fairly certain some of the really nice L2 images (a lot of filament structure and fronts in the chl) are being lost in the process.

What other products are you binning? Try binning just chlorophyll.

Interesting--that does preserve the chlorophyll. I was originally binning standard L2_OC files with all variables. I guess this means there's a memory allocation problem and seadas is dropping data because of that? I suppose I can bin each variable separately (to be conservative) but it would be useful, if it's known, what triggers l2gen to drop data since having a bunch of separate L3 files is not very convenient.

The result is by design, not a memory issue. If any one product in the list of products to be binned is invalid, then the pixel is not included in the binning. It's probably PIC or nFLH that is failing. Do you really need PIC in Monterey Bay?

Good to know. No, I don't need PIC, I'll disable all the standard fields that I'm not using and try again.
