Ulrich Bathmann Project Title: EUROPEAN IRON FERTILISATION EXPERIMENT Principal Investigator(s): U. Bathmann, Victor Smetacek Funding Agency(s): AWI | BMBF (German Ministry of Education & Research) Description of the Research Project and Justification for Real-time SeaWiFS Data: EIFEX is a 9 week long iron fertilisation experiment. At present, scientists on the R.V. Polarstern are seeking a stable eddy, south of the Antarctic Polar Front, using satellite altimeter data and CTD casts. On locating their site, a preliminary CTD and airborne lidar survey will characterise the biological, physical and chemical conditions in and around the eddy. Around 20 tonnes of iron sulphate will then be released into the ocean surface layer. Further airborne lidar and CTD grid surveys together with weekly, low resolution MoDIS chlorophyll maps will be used to monitor the development and fate of the expected ensuing phytoplankton bloom. We are applying last-minute for a SeaWiFS floating license to complement these measurements. The HRPT station HAWI, on board the Polarstern, is being used to record SeaWiFS data routinely in delayed-mode for this extra year of NASA-Orbimage co-operation. The scientists on board would be grateful for immediate, high resolution and, cloud permitting, more frequent satellite coverage of the iron fertilisation area, so I am applying opportunistically for floating license #1, which is still available for the period to 18th February.
